Interview for the Education Ministry of Buenos Aires

D. Cuartielles spent two weeks (November 2nd - 15th, 2008) launching the Lab-in-a-box project together with the Ministry of Education of the City of Buenos Aires in Argentina. Thanks to the kind support of the Carolina Foundation, the CCEBA, and the Spanish Embassy (through the Education's Council) David could travel to Argentina and run a course for 25 high school teachers who are strongly involved in the use of new technologies in the classroom.

This is the seed for this new project that we expect will transform the way technology is perceived as an educational tool. David had a long conversation with some of the ministry's representatives regarding this topic and some of the other concerns that drive 1scale1 and other initiatives where David is involved. That interview has been transcribed almost fully and it is available at the ministry's weblog. Take a look at it here (it is in Spanish):

INTRODUCTION

Lab-in-a-box is a project aiming the developent of educational materials for primary and secondary schools in the fields of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Natural Sciences, Geography, and Technology. The contents will link theory and practice and will allow for an easy transition between the physical and the virtual through the creation of mixed media exercises.

Furthermore, Lab-in-a-box will be working only with open source technologies (both software and hardware), will become a commercial product, but will also offer alternatives to those not able of purchasing it.

GOALS

The general goals of the project are:

- Introduction of state of the art of technology into primary and secondary education

- Bridging the digital divide in education through the use of open source technologies

Specific goals for the project:

Workshop - concept generation for multitouch technologies

This is a FREE workshop call for K3 staff and students with a major in Interaction Design (BA, MA, or PhD level). K3 is the School of Arts and Communication at Malmö University, Sweden.

INTRODUCTION

1scale1 is proud to announce our first workshop on concept generation within the subject of multitouch technologies. The workshop is an internal activity for K3 members and will count with the participation and support of FLATFROG, NUI, TAT, and TACTEL

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT?

This workshop is an opportunity to get your ideas into reality by discussing them with experts in the field. It is also a good chance to get access to interesting thesis jobs with one of the above mentioned companies. The application process is now open, we will select a maximum of 15 participants among the academic community. Business To Buttons: New Interaction Techniques

During the BusinessToButtons conference in Malmo, D. Cuartielles will introduce Physical Prototyping as a technique for interaction designers to create new artifacts. The lecture will be on June 12th at about 13.30 at the main conference hall.

Within the same context, but on Saturday June 14th, the 1scale1 team together with TENK's design group will host a workshop in creating a multiplayer wireless game in only four hours. During the session we will introduce the use of microcontrollers and other digital gadgetry in the production of interactive artifacts and software running in a computer as the main game engine.

1scale1 at RagTag

The RagTag workshop was organized by the Performing Pictures group at the Interactive Institute in Stockholm in February this year. David Cuartielles spoke about the latest cases 1scale1 has been working with. You can take a look at the David's  talk documentation that has been released here recently.

The workshop included a series of lectures and practical sessions where practicioners presented ways to deal with technology applied to arts. The main focus was new forms of video both as a representation system, a narrative tool, a technological platform, and a performative tool.

David also collaborated with Bengt Sjolen in hacking several platforms for displaying pictures and moving images. Bengt's talk was very inspiring and was documented here.
